You can assess a frame's real build quality in five physical checks, no expertise required: (1) open and close the hinge - good hinges move smoothly with even resistance and no play; (2) look into the material - genuine acetate has depth and pattern running through it, cheap plastic has colour sitting on the surface; (3) run a finger along every edge - quality frames are hand-polished with no rough seams or mould lines; (4) place the frame on a flat table - temples and rims should sit dead level; (5) hold the lens to a light - no waviness, no distortion at the edges. Price and logo tell you what the brand spent on marketing; these five checks tell you what it spent on the frame.
Why nobody teaches you this
The traditional optical counter has no incentive to hand you an inspection method — the margin structure rewards moving you to whatever is stocked, at whatever the frame-plus-lens split obscures. The result is a market where most buyers judge a frame by two signals, price and logo, and both are unreliable. A rational buyer needs a third signal: the object itself.
Check 1 - The hinge (the truth-teller)
Open each temple slowly, five times. What you want: smooth, damped, identical resistance through the whole arc, a clean stop at full open, zero wobble when you waggle the temple gently. What condemns a frame: gritty movement, a temple that flops the last few degrees, side-to-side play at the barrel. The hinge is the component under the most mechanical stress, and it's where cheap manufacturing hides least well. It is also the reason we specify German high-precision hinges on every frame - it is the one part you cannot polish into looking better than it is.
Check 2 - The material (depth vs paint)
Tilt the frame under light. In genuine acetate the colour and pattern are in the sheet - a havana pattern shows layers and translucence, and the inside of the frame matches the outside. In painted injection-moulded plastic the colour is a skin: look at the temple tips or the inner rim and you'll often find the raw material peeking through, or a pattern that repeats with mechanical regularity. On metal frames, check the plating at contact points - thin plating already shows wear on a display piece.
Check 3 - The finish (run your finger)
Trace the inner rim, the bridge, the temple edges. Quality frames are tumbled and hand-polished until every surface is smooth; cheap frames carry mould seams, flash lines and sharp inner edges - the things that become a pressure sore in week three. Hand-finishing is expensive, which is exactly why its absence is such a reliable tell.
Check 4 - Symmetry (the table test)
Place the frame upside down on a flat surface: both temple tips and the top of both rims should touch evenly. Rock it gently - a frame that rocks was assembled out of true and will never sit straight on your face. Then look at it front-on at eye level: lens shapes and rim thicknesses should mirror perfectly.
Check 5 - The lens (edges and light)
Hold the lens toward a straight-edged light source - a tube light or window frame - and move it slowly. The reflected line should stay straight across the lens, including near the edges. Waviness means poor optics. On sunglasses, check that the tint is even and that looking through the periphery doesn't smear the world. Darkness is not protection; build quality is.
What price does - and doesn't - tell you
A very cheap frame will usually fail several of these checks: that's the compromise, and it's fine if you know you're making it. But a high price doesn't guarantee a pass - much of a branded price is licensing and retail chain, not build. The five checks are how you separate the two. When a frame passes all five and costs ₹5,990 with lenses included, that isn't a discount story; it's what the price of quality looks like when nobody in the middle is taking a cut.
